An Introduction to Sugarcane Bagasse

Around 1.9 billion tons of sugarcane is produced annually, with Brazil and India being the leading producers. Once the juice from all of this sugarcane has been extracted, the fibrous, dry pulp that is left behind is known as sugarcane bagasse.

Sugarcane bagasse is often discarded. However, it is a great material for producing paper and sustainable, eco-friendly tableware.

In appearance, sugarcane bagasse can vary from lemon yellow to yellowish-gray and is made up of cellulose and lignin fibers. Cellulose is the largest component of bagasse, at 50%. The rest of sugarcane bagasse’s chemical composition consists of 25% hemicellulose and 25% lignin.

Applications of Sugarcane Bagasse

Sugarcane bagasse pulp is made using sugarcane pulping machines. This pulp has a smooth, slurry-like texture, and has a great absorption capacity. This makes it ideal for various applications.

Here’s a quick look at the process of manufacturing sugarcane bagasse tableware.

Pulping

In the pulping process, bagasse fiber sheets get mixed with water and chemicals, breaking it down into a slurry to create pulp stock.

Forming (Pulp Molding)

In this part of the process, the bagasse pulp stock gets molded into tableware shapes using the pulp molding machine.

Drying

Next, the formed products are passed through a heated drying section to remove moisture, resulting in a sturdy and solid structure.

Trimming and Finishing

To ensure smooth edges and consistent sizing, the dried tableware is trimmed before being sent for a final quality inspection.
