Wedge Wire Screen Basket – advantages, working principle and importance in Paper Mill
The Wedge Wire Screen Basket for pulp stock preparation are known for their exceptional effectiveness in separating fibers based on their size and effectively removing contaminants with elongated or irregular shapes. This results in a significant improvement in removal efficiency and pulp quality. Moreover, these baskets provide greater flexibility and are less prone to plugging compared to screens with circular holes, ultimately leading to a higher yield of usable fibers in the final paper product.
Wedge Wire Screen Basket Working Principle:
Pulp Slurry enters screen from top or side, directed onto rotating screen basket surface. The slotted screen basket is mounted vertically and rotates at a consistent speed. Centrifugal force created by screen rotor’s circular velocity pushes pulp against screen basket surface during slurry entry.
The slotted screen basket contains slots with specific width as per operational need. These slots are designed to allow desired sized-fibers to pass through while retaining oversized fibers, sand, metal pieces, and other unwanted materials. Pulp collection involves clean pulp, free from impurities, entering a screen basket, and being discharged through chutes for further processing in the papermaking process.
Importance of Wedge Wire Screen Basket in Papermaking
Separates contaminates of different shapes
Wedge Wire baskets are particularly effective at removing contaminants that have an elongated or irregular shape, such as stickies, which tend to align with the slot and be retained by the screen. This improves the removal efficiency of these contaminants compared to screens with circular holes.
Reduced fiber loss
Wedge Wire baskets tend to have a lower fiber loss compared to screens with round holes, as fibers can more easily pass through the slots. This helps to maximize the yield of usable fibers in the final paper product.
Improves pulp quality
The use of Wedge Wire screen basket can result in improved pulp quality. As the slots are more effective at capturing and removing stickies and other elongated contaminants, the resulting pulp has fewer impurities that can negatively impact the papermaking process and the quality of the final product.
Advantages of Wedge Wire Screen Basket
Customisable product as per challenges and requirements
Wedge Wire screen basket can be customized with different slot widths and patterns to target specific contaminants and optimize removal efficiency. This allows for greater flexibility in addressing the unique challenges of each papermaking process.
Wedge Wire screen basket are less prone to plugging compared to screens with round holes, as the slots allow for better flow of pulp and reduced accumulation of contaminants. This results in more consistent operation and reduced downtime for maintenance and cleaning.
